PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The project concerns a child education centre located in Busta, a small town near to Montebelluna in the province of Treviso, Veneto Region (north of Italy). This school has become the centre of the social life of Busta community: it’s placed in front of the municipal area, close to the football pitch, and with a large playground inside.
It welcomes up to 84 - 3 to 5 years old – children to three didactic branches; it includes a hall, a kitchen, a dining room, a psycho-motility room and a creative activities lab. Facilities consist of teachers room, offices, archives, dressing rooms, toilet both for teachers and visitors, kitchen with cupboard and staff room.
The building may be considered like a useful system for children development, a tool to communicate and increase the young users’ knowledge. The harmonious shapes seem to support children movements and create an ergonomic and fluid space; in the mean time they insert themselves in the surrounding environment interacting with natural elements.
Classrooms are oriented toward south while general services rooms are north oriented; refectory and psycho-motility room are east oriented and their large windows look at the new town square. The innovative plan places toilets in a single central unit. In this way teachers can control children and safety is guaranteed.
Due to the green solutions, Busta’s school is one of the first schools to run for the Platinum LEED school certification in Italy.

SUSTAINABILITY STRATEGY

To obtain the best performances in comfort, functionality, energy saving and environmental compatibility, school architecture based on an holistic approach.

Busta’s school takes advantage of renewable energies, like solar energy – by means of solar greenhouses and of a photovoltaic system - and geothermic energy – by means of a geothermal heat plan.
During hot seasons, internal comfort increases due to natural night air flow and high density materials.
Collected rain water is used to irrigate the park, to flush the toilet and for other not potable scopes.
Used materials allow the building to reach high level performances; they come from the same area in which the school has been built; they are mainly recycled with a very low level of VOC emissions.
